Marathon Season 2 adds two experimental PvE modes
Marathon is changing course in Season 2. Bungie has revealed that Nightfall, arriving June 2, will add two experimental PvE modes to the extraction shooter. That is a notable shift because Bungie previously emphasized the unpredictability and social tension of PvP-focused extraction play. The move now looks like a response to player-count pressure and wider genre demand. Many extraction players love loot, risk, exploration and tactical decision-making, but do not always want every session defined by hostile human squads. PvE can give players a way to learn maps, test builds and enjoy the atmosphere without losing everything to another team camping an exit. The danger is fragmentation. If PvE becomes too generous, it can undermine the extraction economy. If it feels too thin, it may not satisfy the players Bungie is trying to win back. Season 2 will also bring a new matchmaking system, more vault space and other core improvements. For Marathon, this is more than a content update. It is Bungie admitting that the launch formula needs widening if the game is going to last.
