Pokémon Champions dev explains limited launch roster

Pokémon Champions producer Masaaki Hoshino has explained why the game launched with a limited roster instead of immediately unleashing the full monster encyclopedia. The short version: the team wants the battle environment to be understandable, especially for players who are not already deep in competitive Pokémon knowledge. The game currently has around 200 usable creatures, with more Pokémon and changes to held-item restrictions planned around the smartphone release window. That is an interesting balancing decision because Pokémon fans often want everything at once, then immediately complain when the meta becomes unreadable. Champions is trying to thread the needle between competitive depth and approachability. Hoshino’s comparison to learning too many shogi pieces at once is a funny but useful way to frame the problem. More content is coming, but the team is clearly trying not to drown new players before they learn to swim.
