Axe Cop brings its absurd JRPG comedy to PlayStation, Xbox and Switch

Axe Cop arrives on consoles today, bringing one of the strangest comedy RPG setups to PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. Published by Electric Airship and developed by Red Triangle Games, the game is based on the comic created from stories by a five-year-old and art by his older brother. That gives the RPG a very specific personality: dinosaurs, bizarre villains, magic gems, Bad Santa Claus, Dr. Stinkyhead and the kind of plot logic only a child could invent. The console version follows the earlier PC release and is priced at $9.99 according to Gematsu. For players, the appeal is not that Axe Cop will be the deepest RPG of the year. The appeal is that it treats absurd imagination as the engine for a Japanese-style turn-based adventure. In a market full of serious fantasy worlds and cinematic grimness, there is something refreshing about an RPG that proudly asks what would happen if a literal five-year-old became narrative director. It could be a fun fit for players who like comic-book weirdness, simple RPG mechanics and games that do not take themselves too seriously.
