Balatro publisher is being acquired by GameSpot owner

By GFA Staff · May 30, 2026

Balatro’s publisher Playstack is being acquired by GameSpot owner Fandom, and the reported enterprise value is $169 million. That is a very loud number for a company whose biggest recent breakout was a poker roguelike that turned everyone into a spreadsheet goblin with opinions about jokers.

The deal shows how valuable successful indie publishing can become when one game cuts through at scale. Balatro was not a licensed blockbuster, not a sequel and not a cinematic monster budget production. It was sharp design, obsession-friendly progression and a word-of-mouth explosion.

For Fandom, acquiring Playstack could mean deeper access to publishing, gaming communities and creator-driven discovery. For indie developers, the question is what happens next. Bigger corporate ownership can bring resources, but it can also bring meetings, strategy decks and the slow death of beautiful weirdness if handled badly.
