Baldur’s Gate II remake reportedly in development

Baldur’s Gate II may be getting the remake treatment, and that is the kind of rumor that makes old-school RPG fans sit up like someone just cast Haste. According to a new report, Wizards of the Coast is working on a remake of Baldur’s Gate II, with original co-lead designer Kevin Martens reportedly involved. There is also chatter that the first Baldur’s Gate may be getting similar treatment, though nothing has been officially announced.

The timing makes perfect sense. Baldur’s Gate 3 turned the series from beloved PC RPG history into a mainstream monster again, and Wizards of the Coast clearly knows there is renewed interest in the older games. The challenge is enormous, though.

Baldur’s Gate II is not just a famous RPG. It is sacred territory for a lot of players. A remake needs modern presentation and usability without sanding away the density, weirdness and party-driven storytelling that made the original matter.
