Former Bungie legal chief criticizes Sony-era direction as Destiny 2 nears final update

Bungie’s post-Sony future is looking increasingly uncomfortable from the outside. As Destiny 2 prepares for its final major content update on June 9, former Bungie legal chief Don McGowan has said the studio is becoming what he feared after the Sony acquisition.

His concern is that Bungie may be turning into more of a publishing imprint under Sony rather than the fiercely independent studio identity fans remember. That lands heavily because Destiny 2 is already approaching a major transition point, and reports continue to swirl around the absence of active Destiny 3 development and possible staff movement around Marathon.

Bungie’s story has always been one of independence, reinvention and massive risk, from Halo to Destiny and beyond. But live-service scale is brutal, and Sony’s ownership adds another layer of pressure. For players, the worry is not corporate structure for its own sake. It is whether Bungie can still make bold games without losing the culture that made people care.
