Destiny 3 is reportedly not in development as Bungie faces possible layoffs

Destiny fans hoping that Bungie’s post-Destiny 2 future meant a clean road toward Destiny 3 may need to lower expectations. A new report says Destiny 3 is not currently planned for immediate production, with Bungie instead pitching new ideas while facing the possibility of significant layoffs.

This follows the confirmation that Destiny 2’s final major live-service content update arrives on June 9, which already made the future of the franchise feel uncertain. The hard truth is that Destiny has become both a legendary franchise and an expensive machine. It helped define the shared-world shooter, but keeping that kind of game alive for nearly a decade takes enormous staff, infrastructure and community pressure.

If Bungie is not ready to commit to Destiny 3, Sony and the studio may be trying to work out whether the next chapter should be another massive live-service commitment or something different.
