Donkey Kong 64 joins Nintendo Switch Online next week

Donkey Kong 64 is joining Nintendo Switch Online on June 4, which means Expansion Pack subscribers can soon return to one of the loudest, strangest and most collectible-heavy 3D platformers Nintendo ever released. The game originally launched in 1999, back when “more stuff” was considered a perfectly reasonable design philosophy and Rare was apparently determined to make players collect enough bananas to qualify for agricultural subsidies.

Its arrival in the Nintendo 64 classics library matters because Donkey Kong 64 has a very specific place in Nintendo history. It is beloved, mocked, nostalgic, bloated and charming all at once.

Modern players may be shocked by how much the game asks them to gather, swap, unlock and endure, but that is part of the appeal. Sometimes preservation means letting players rediscover the joy and pain exactly as it was.
