Final Fantasy Resonance brings HD-2D to the mainline Final Fantasy spirit

Final Fantasy Resonance may be one of the most interesting Square Enix reveals from the Direct wave. It is a brand-new HD-2D Final Fantasy adventure, developed with Lancarse, and it leans directly into turn-based battles, voiced characters, dramatic story scenes, an overworld, chocobos and airships.

In other words, Square Enix seems to be asking what a classic Final Fantasy could look like if rebuilt with modern HD-2D craft instead of full cinematic spectacle. The extra hook is the “visions” system, with recruitable forms of classic characters such as Cloud, Terra and Clive joining battles.

That could either be a smart celebration of the whole franchise or a dangerous nostalgia buffet if not handled carefully. Still, Final Fantasy Resonance has a clear pitch: old-school soul, modern presentation, and enough legacy power to make longtime fans immediately curious.
