Final Fantasy XIV Online heads to Switch 2 with early access in August

Final Fantasy XIV Online is coming to Switch 2, with early access beginning in August. That is a major MMO signal for Nintendo’s new hardware.

FFXIV is not a small side project. It is one of the most successful subscription MMORPGs in the world, with years of expansions, story arcs, raids, jobs and players who can explain dungeon etiquette with alarming seriousness.

Bringing it to Switch 2 gives Square Enix access to another large console audience and gives Nintendo a serious persistent online RPG. The subscription requirement will matter, but MMO players are used to that conversation. The real question is performance, UI comfort and how well the game’s enormous interface translates to handheld play. If Square gets it right, Switch 2 could become a surprisingly strong way to live in Eorzea.
