Polish developer 11 bit studios is bringing its acclaimed survival city-building game Frostpunk to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 today, October 19, allowing players to make morally uncomfortable decisions about humanity's survival from practically anywhere. Originally released for PC in April 2018, Frostpunk takes place in an alternative nineteenth century where catastrophic global cooling has forced the remaining population to construct settlements around enormous generators. Players must manage resources, maintain infrastructure, establish laws and attempt to prevent their citizens from freezing to death.

The game's defining feature is its willingness to make leadership genuinely uncomfortable. Decisions concerning child labour, medical treatment, food distribution and working conditions can determine whether a settlement survives, but successful policies may also carry serious ethical consequences. The Nintendo release includes a standard edition and a Complete Edition containing three expansions: The Rifts, The Last Autumn and On The Edge. Launch promotions offer a thirty percent discount on the base game and thirty-five percent on the Complete Edition. A playable demo was also made available ahead of release, allowing prospective customers to experiment with the controls and presentation.

Bringing a complex city builder to portable hardware presents obvious interface challenges because the original game was designed around managing substantial amounts of information. The success of the conversion will therefore depend heavily on how comfortably players can navigate menus and issue commands using Nintendo's controls. Frostpunk's arrival also precedes Frostpunk 1886, an expanded version of the original experience currently in development. For Nintendo owners, today's release provides an opportunity to discover why the game developed such a dedicated following. Most portable games are ideal for relaxing during a train journey. Frostpunk instead invites you to spend that journey deciding whether exhausted factory workers deserve another four hours of sleep.
