Nintendo eShop Update: Busy Week for Switch and Switch 2

Nintendo's Latest eShop Update Brings Another Busy Week to Switch and Switch 2 — original editorial gaming news illustration

Nintendo's October 2 eShop update highlights another substantial week across Switch and Switch 2, following the arrival of Minecraft Dungeons II, the Switch 2 versions of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, and upgraded versions of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II. The significance is less any single surprise announcement than the speed with which Switch 2's catalogue is filling out. Nintendo's new machine is benefiting from a mixture of first-party releases, current multiplatform games and upgraded versions of software that previously lived on hardware with considerably tighter technical constraints. That last category may not generate the excitement of an entirely new Zelda, but it matters for the platform's long-term library: games such as the Middle-earth titles become much more credible portable propositions when developers are no longer designing around the original Switch's 2017-era silicon. Nintendo is also maintaining the original Switch storefront rather than immediately pretending 150-million-plus existing consoles have evaporated. The result is an awkward but healthy transition period where two generations share the shop window. Your wallet, regrettably, receives no generational upgrade.
