PlayStation's Planned 2028 Disc Transition Continues to Divide Players

Debate continues over Sony's confirmed plan to discontinue physical-disc production for newly released PlayStation games beginning in January 2028. Sony has said the transition will not affect games released on disc before that date, but new titles launched afterward are expected to be distributed digitally.

Supporters point to lower manufacturing and logistics costs, while critics raise concerns about resale, lending, long-term preservation and dependence on online storefronts. Some publishers have indicated that they intend to keep producing physical editions while the option remains available.

Claims that every existing PlayStation disc or previously purchased physical game will stop functioning are incorrect. The announcement concerns future manufacturing, not the immediate removal of support for the current physical library.
