Pokémon UNITE’s April 16 update starts a new Battle Pass season and adds All-Star Draft Pick rules for tournament mode (making Pokémon unselectable in later matches once they’ve “stepped onto the stadium” in a best-of series).

What it means for gamers: competitive play gets more strategic and more punishing in a fun way. Draft rules like this reward actual planning instead of “spam the same comfort picks forever.” The consequence is that tournaments become less predictable, which is great for spectators and terrifying for players who only know how to win with exactly one Pokémon. The funny part is watching teams realize mid-series that they accidentally used all their best picks early and now they’re trying to clutch game five with something they barely understand. That’s the esports version of “we used all the good snacks on day one.”
