PS5 UK sales reportedly dropped 50 percent in May

PS5 sales reportedly dropped 50 percent in the UK during May, which is exactly the kind of hardware headline Sony did not want during showcase week. According to the report, PS5 sales ended up only around 400 units ahead of Xbox Series X/S in the region, while Switch 2 took first place.
Price increases are an obvious suspect, though the market is more complicated than one number. Switch 2 is still new, Xbox had a boost from Forza Horizon 6, and PS5 is now a mature platform approaching its sixth year on the market.
Still, this matters because Sony’s hardware story has become more difficult. Higher prices, fewer obvious first-party releases and stronger Nintendo momentum all create pressure. State of Play helped on the software side, but hardware momentum is its own beast. Sony needs Wolverine and its wider pipeline to keep PS5 feeling essential.
