Take-Two CEO defends Red Dead Online as successful and long-lasting

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has pushed back against the idea that Red Dead Online was a wasted opportunity, calling it successful and long-lasting. That may not fully satisfy players who wanted Red Dead Online to become a cowboy-sized GTA Online, but Zelnick’s argument is clear: Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold 85 million units, remains culturally relevant and continues to move as a premium single-player open-world product years after launch.
The real frustration is that players can see the potential. Red Dead Online had the world, atmosphere and fantasy to become something enormous, but Rockstar’s long-term focus moved toward Grand Theft Auto 6.
From a business perspective, that is understandable. From a fan perspective, it still stings like a horse kick. The positive reading is that Take-Two still sees Red Dead as a massive franchise. The cruel reading is that everyone has to wait until after GTA 6 eats the planet.
