Former SEGA VP says he has heard a Sonic CD remake is in the works

A Sonic CD remake may be in the works, at least according to chatter from a former SEGA executive. That is very much rumor territory for now, because SEGA has not officially announced the project.

Still, it is an interesting possibility. Sonic CD is one of the strangest classic Sonic games: time travel, multiple versions of stages, animated flair, Metal Sonic, Amy’s debut and a soundtrack situation that still starts arguments depending on region and nostalgia level.

A remake could either clean up one of Sonic’s most experimental 2D entries or flatten the weirdness that made it memorable. That is the danger with remaking Sonic CD. It is not simply “another old Sonic.” It is a specific little time-travel oddity. If SEGA really is revisiting it, the remake needs to preserve the strange energy, not just polish the pixels until they behave.
