Stellar Blade: Blood Rain has been announced, and Shift Up is clearly not walking away from the slick action space that made the first game such a conversation magnet. The reveal introduces a new protagonist, Evie, and points toward a darker, bloodier follow-up with a different combat personality. That is a smart move.

A direct sequel could have simply repeated Eve’s exact formula and hoped the audience followed, but a new lead gives Blood Rain room to evolve. The challenge is making sure the game is more than style and spectacle. Stellar Blade already had the look, the controversy and the attention.

Blood Rain needs to prove the combat, world and story can grow into something stronger. If it can do that, Shift Up may have a real action franchise rather than one very shiny lightning strike.
