Switch 2 and Switch price increases take effect in Japan today

Nintendo’s Japanese hardware price increases take effect today, which is not exactly the cheerful confetti cannon moment Switch 2 owners were hoping for. The revised pricing raises the standard Switch 2 in Japan from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980, while the OLED Switch, base Switch and Switch Lite also move upward.
Nintendo Switch Online prices in Japan will rise later, on July 1, while planned revisions for the United States, Canada and Europe are set for September 1. Nintendo cites broader market conditions, which is corporate-speak for everything costs more and someone has to absorb the pain.
The challenge is perception. Switch 2 already needs a strong software cadence to justify its place in a market full of expensive hardware, subscriptions and cross-platform games. Price increases make that software argument even more important. Nintendo can survive higher pricing, but only if the games keep making people forget they just paid more.
