The LEGO PlayStation Goes on General Sale Today, Complete With Tiny Ape Escape and Gran Turismo Worlds
The original PlayStation has completed its transformation from cutting-edge electronics to something adults nostalgically rebuild out of expensive plastic bricks. The LEGO PlayStation set goes on general sale today after early access for LEGO Insiders and PlayStation Direct customers began October 1. The 1,911-piece model recreates Sony's original grey console at close to 1:1 scale and includes a buildable controller that plugs into the machine, working Power and Open mechanisms and removable miniature dioramas celebrating Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. The Gran Turismo scene contains a tiny racetrack and cars, while Ape Escape gets an island scene complete with a monkey whose helmet light can be switched between blue and red. At €159.99 in Europe, £139.99 in the UK and $179.99 in the US, this is obviously aimed less at children looking for something to throw across the bedroom and more at adults who remember the strange excitement of discovering that videogames had suddenly acquired CDs. The hidden game references are a particularly nice touch. Sony could easily have produced a grey rectangle and relied entirely on nostalgia. Instead, the set remembers that the interesting part of a PlayStation was never really the box. It was what happened after you pressed Power.
