M2 cancels long-running Ubusuna development

Ubusuna has officially been canceled, closing the book on one of the stranger long-running hopes in the shoot ’em up scene. The project was first announced all the way back in 2014 and carried extra weight because it came from Hiroshi Iuchi, the creator of Ikaruga and a major name for players who care about precise, elegant arcade design.

M2 says it has ended development, which is disappointing but not entirely shocking after so many years without a clear path to release. The cancellation hurts because shoot ’em up fans are used to waiting, believing and reading tiny signs from niche developers like tea leaves.

Ubusuna sounded like the kind of project that could have bridged classic arcade intensity with modern presentation. Instead, it now becomes another fascinating what-could-have-been. For a genre built on survival against impossible odds, this one finally ran out of continues.
