Xbox Cloud Gaming's Coming Hour Limits Put the Economics of Game Streaming Back in the Spotlight — original editorial gaming news illustration

Microsoft's approaching Xbox Cloud Gaming limits are receiving renewed attention as November gets closer, and the numbers make the change difficult to ignore. Beginning next month, Game Pass Ultimate will include 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, Premium will receive 10 hours and Essential just five. Subscribers who exhaust those allowances will be able to buy additional cloud time through the Xbox Store. Microsoft is also opening cloud streaming to people without a Game Pass subscription: players will be able to purchase streaming hours and use them with eligible games they already own. Microsoft says the limits are necessary because the cost of operating cloud gaming rises as usage grows, and estimates that roughly four percent of Game Pass subscribers will be affected. That percentage sounds reassuring until you realise those four percent are probably the people who actually use cloud gaming as a primary gaming platform. The change also exposes the awkward economics behind the industry's decade-long dream that enormous remote data centres could eventually replace local consoles. Fifteen hours is enough for casual sampling; it is not remotely enough for somebody treating cloud gaming as their main Xbox. Microsoft has not yet announced pricing for additional hours. When it does, players will finally be able to calculate whether gaming in the cloud is cheaper than simply putting a console under the television—which is not necessarily the comparison cloud evangelists hoped we'd still be making.
