Ninja Theory Faces Closure After Two Potential Deals Fall Through

The future of Hellblade developer Ninja Theory has become considerably more precarious. Microsoft says two potential agreements that might have secured a future for the studio have fallen through, and formal employee consultation is now underway over a proposed closure. Xbox says it is continuing to explore other possible paths, so the studio has not technically been shut, but this is considerably more serious than the usual corporate phrase about evaluating strategic options. Ninja Theory is the Cambridge studio behind Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry. It joined Microsoft in 2018 during Xbox's aggressive studio-acquisition period. The possibility that the same developer could disappear less than a decade later illustrates just how comprehensively Microsoft's priorities have changed. The company has already moved several formerly internal studios toward independence or new management structures as part of its broader reset. For fans, the immediate question will naturally be what happens to Ninja Theory's games and intellectual property. For the people making them, the question is rather more immediate. Microsoft's restructuring may ultimately produce a leaner Xbox organisation, but there is nothing particularly abstract about the people losing jobs while the boxes move around the corporate diagram.
