Well Dweller Sends a Matchstick-Wielding Bird Into One of 2026's Strangest Fairy Tales

Indie developer Kyle Thompson's latest Metroidvania, Well Dweller, launches today on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with Xbox Game Pass access available from day one. Thompson previously created Islets and Crypt Custodian, so anyone familiar with his work should have a reasonable idea of the combination here: precise exploration, distinctive hand-crafted worlds and a willingness to make adorable things live in deeply uncomfortable circumstances. Players control Glimmer, a tiny bird carrying a matchstick, whose family is in danger of becoming part of a wicked queen's royal gown. Apparently kidnapping was not theatrical enough. The adventure takes place across a dark fairy-tale kingdom filled with strange characters, monsters, hidden areas and new abilities that gradually expand the explorable world. The premise may sound whimsical, but Well Dweller leans deliberately into morbid imagery and unsettling mythology rather than playing things entirely cute. The game arrives simultaneously across two Nintendo generations plus PC, PlayStation and Xbox, making this a particularly wide launch for a solo-developed indie. With the Metroidvania genre now crowded enough to require its own municipal planning department, Well Dweller is betting that a strong visual identity and Thompson's established design chops can help Glimmer shine through the noise.
