Dark Pals: The 1st Floor brings mascot horror to Steam today

Dark Pals: The 1st Floor launches today on Steam, and it is aiming directly at the mascot horror audience. The game traps players inside an abandoned children’s asylum and asks them to solve puzzles, evade disturbing mascot characters and uncover secrets tied to a forgotten past. Steam community updates from the developer pointed to a May 1 launch window, with the release planned around 3pm CEST / 9am EST.
For horror fans, the appeal is obvious: mascot horror works when it contrasts childish designs with deeply uncomfortable environments, and Dark Pals appears to be leaning into that contrast with abandoned facilities, puzzle mechanics and strange character names such as Binky Drinky, Chompy Chasey and Inky.
The key will be whether the game can create real tension rather than simply relying on loud scares and creepy mascots. The best games in this subgenre give players a reason to investigate and fear the setting at the same time. If Dark Pals can make its puzzles, creature behaviour and story reveals work together, it could become a strong indie horror pick for May.
