Final Fantasy XIV Goes Full “Big Expansion Energy” With Evercold, Switch 2, and Evangelion Chaos
Final Fantasy XIV had a massive announcement day with Evercold, its next major expansion, now set for January 2027. On top of that, Square Enix confirmed the MMO is coming to Switch 2 in August 2026, and somehow the news got even wilder with an Evangelion collaboration called “Ghosts of Desire.” For gamers, this is not just another “new zones and raids” expansion reveal. Evercold sounds like a serious structural refresh, with new jobs, a higher level cap, new cities, new dungeons, trials, raids, PvP updates, and even talk of battle system changes through Reborn and Evolved modes.
The Switch 2 version is the biggest accessibility move: it brings one of the world’s most respected MMOs to Nintendo’s new portable hardware. The catch is subscription-related. Existing players may get a discount, but Switch 2 has its own separate subscription setup, meaning “play anywhere” still comes with accountant homework. Still, for MMO players, this is a huge signal that FFXIV wants to remain a living giant rather than coast on old glory.
