Nintendo president wants Switch 2 to match the original Switch’s long lifespan
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa reportedly wants Switch 2 to match the long lifespan of the original Switch. That is a bold target. The original Switch has become one of the most successful and durable gaming systems ever, with more than 155 million units sold and a life cycle that is still not completely over. Switch 2 is off to a strong start, with just under 20 million units sold, major first-party releases already on the board and Pokémon Pokopia turning into a surprise hit. But the situation is very different now. Hardware prices are rising, component costs are more volatile, and players have more devices competing for attention, from handheld PCs to mobile cloud options. A long Switch 2 generation will require more than launch momentum. Nintendo needs evergreen software, strong hardware revisions, third-party support and a reason for players to keep buying games year after year. The good news is that Nintendo knows how to stretch a platform when the software is right. The harder part is doing it again at a higher price.
