Stardock Entertainment has added Empire in Decay to its growing publishing programme, partnering with Spanish developer Siesta Games to bring the tactical roguelike deckbuilder to Steam in early 2027. Empire in Decay combines deckbuilding with turn-based positional combat inspired by chess. Players lead a rebellion through the districts of Daandria, building a deck, recruiting units and trying to reach the palace where a tyrannical king is waiting to receive what is presumably a strongly worded performance review. More than 200 cards are planned across four factions, with two available initially and two unlocked during the campaign. Units can be upgraded, while relics and crafted artefacts add another layer of build customisation. One important wrinkle is persistence between encounters: losses to a player's followers can carry forward rather than magically resetting after each fight, making reckless sacrifices more costly than they would be on a traditional chessboard. Procedurally generated routes through the city are intended to make each rebellion develop differently, mixing battles with events and choices that can improve or complicate the run. Stardock's involvement gives the project a more established publishing partner as Siesta Games continues development toward its revised early-2027 target. Apparently saving an empire now requires cards, chess tactics and the emotional resilience to watch your favourite unit remain very definitely dead.
