Playdate just told generative AI to leave its tiny yellow clubhouse
Panic has set a very clear policy for Playdate's Catalog: as of April 2026, it will no longer accept titles that use generative AI for art, audio, music, text, or dialogue.
The guidance explicitly names tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, Midjourney, Suno, and Udio as examples of what falls under the ban. Previously approved titles can remain available, but they will be flagged with an explanation. Panic is still allowing AI assistance in coding for now, though those games will also be labeled so players can decide what they want to support.
What it means for gamers: on paper this is a storefront rule for a niche handheld with a crank. In practice it is a very pointed stance in a much bigger industry argument. Playdate is betting that a human-made catalog feels more handcrafted, more distinctive, and more aligned with the whole device's tiny-screen handmade charm.
