Cryptic’s Free Endgame Characters Could Save Returning MMO Players From the “Where Was I?” Wall

Cryptic Studios launched a Quick Start promotion across Star Trek Online, Neverwinter, and Champions Online, giving new, current, and returning players free endgame-ready characters on PC until 21 May. This is a smart move because the hardest boss in an old MMO is often not a dragon, spaceship, or demon lord. It is confusion. Returning players log in after years away, see 400 currencies, outdated builds, empty hotbars, half-remembered quests, and immediately close the game.
By offering geared characters with pre-built setups, Cryptic is trying to remove the intimidation barrier and push people straight into meaningful content. For gamers, this is valuable if you always liked the idea of trying these MMOs but bounced off the ancient onboarding. It also gives veterans a reason to experiment with alts without grinding from zero. The danger is that instant endgame can feel hollow if players do not understand their class or role. But as a re-entry ramp, this is exactly the kind of quality-of-life thinking older live-service games need.
