MercurySteam announces job cuts as Blades of Fire arrives on Steam
MercurySteam has announced job cuts in the same week Blades of Fire arrived on Steam. The studio described the move as a “workforce adjustment process” and said it would help affected developers find new opportunities, but did not disclose the number of people impacted. The timing is painful. Blades of Fire has just come to Steam after an Epic Games Store exclusivity period, alongside a substantial 2.0 update adding New Game Plus, Titanium difficulty, boss rematches, more death animations and Steam Deck support. PC Gamer notes that the game previously underperformed, with publisher-side financial expectations taking a hit. For players, this is another harsh reminder that a strong combat idea or interesting weapon-forging system is not enough if a game misses its launch window commercially. For the industry, it is another familiar story: talented teams, expensive development and layoffs following a project that did not reach expectations. Hopefully the Steam release gives Blades of Fire a second life, but the human cost has already arrived.
